Velocity Unit Conversion Table

Velocity is defined as the rate of change of the position of an object or to be more precise it is a measure of the direction and the speed of an object. Speed measures the swiftness or quickness of the movement of an object hence it is scalar, while rate of change or velocity is a vector quantity i.e., it has a magnitude and a direction. Some times, people fail to trace distinction between speed and velocity and assume both a little identical but both terms are at variance as speed describes how fast an object is moving while velocity explains how fast and in what direction the object is moving. For example, if it is said that a car is traveling at 60 km/h to the south, then the statement is specifying both speed (60 km/h) and velocity (to the south) at the same time.

When it comes to measure velocity of a moving object it is measured by computing the time difference between the object passing two known positions. In case these measurements are at a far distance and the velocity of the object is varying than the result will be an average velocity. The average velocity can be calculated by dividing the total distance traveled with the average time traveled. In addition to this, velocity is also related to acceleration which is a rate of change of a velocity. The velocity for objects that are accelerating is calculated with different formula. Like, if a object is accelerating at a constant acceleration ‘a’ with the initial velocity ‘u’ for a specific period of time ‘t’; then the final velocity ‘v’ will be calculated as v= u + a X t.

Velocity Unit Definition:
Velocity (Speed) - a term that may mean two things; either the rate of changes through time, or a physical quantity that basically describes the rate at which an object covers distance.

Speed formula:
v = d/t
Where:
d - distance
t - time
