Numbers Unit Conversion Table

A number is a mathematical object that is used to count, label and measure. In earlier times numbers have been used in the form of tally marks like scratches on bone or wood but subsequently number are used in more abstract system. Today, there are various ways of expressing numbers in numeric systems such as Hindu-Arabic numerals, Roman, Unary System, Binary Numeral System and Positional System.

The positional system works with a base and it is a method of representing or encoding numbers. If we talk about mathematical numeral systems, the base or radix is the number of unique digits (including zero) and it is a system wherein numbers are displayed for example in base-n, the system has ‘n’ characters (including 0). Numbers are represented with digits which are smaller than n. Base-1 is a Unary numeral system and is a simplest numeral system to represent natural numbers. While Base-2 is a Binary numeral system and it is a positional system with a base of 2 wherein numeric values are represented with the help of two symbols: 0 and 1.

In the similar fashion, Base-3 is Ternary numeral system which uses digits 0, 1 and 2 to represent real number. Base-8 is a Octal numeral system that uses the digits 0 to 7 and is widely used in digital equipment. Base-10 is the Decimal numeral system and is widely used by people. It is a positional numeral system having 10 as its base. Base-12 and Base-16 are Duodecimal and Hexadecimal numeral systems using twelve and sixteen as base. Base-16 is used in modern digital equipment, mathematics and computer science.

With the help of Online Conversions’ numbers unit conversion table one can easily convert a number into another base. The symbols 0-9 represent value zero to nine (0-9) and alphabetical letters A to Z represent values 10 to 36.
